May 31st uncovered the winners of the 2013 Australian Interior Design Awards. One of my favourite entries and a very valid winner is the ABU House by Stephen Collins Interior Design Pty Ltd. The Surry Hills warehouse conversion won the Best of State - Residential award for NSW.
The warehouse conversion to a single residence combined new interior and exterior architecture within the existing perimeter walls. The building consists of an altered main building and a new rear building separated by two courtyards. The brief set by the client was to create a residence for an art collector, requiring controlled light access, airflow and climate.
Judge Will Fung says of the winning design: "Great adaptive re-use of a former commercial building. Beautifully detailed interiors set amongst a series of new terraced courtyards and framed views."
My favourite parts of the design are the way the light streams into the space, the open deck area, the black staircase and those magnolia trees!!
